Wow!
This morning we headed back out of Donegal the same way that we had come in yesterday. We had crossed the peninsula that lies west of Donegal on our way here. Today we decided to take the perimeter route around the peninsula. More of the Wild Atlantic Way.
While doing some research about this area we realized that in a small settlement at the tip called Glencolmcille there was a Folk Village. Back in the 1960's the local priest had persuaded all levels of government to put up the money to build 8 buildings that represented a snapshot of certain periods in the history of Glencolmcille. They were filled with time appropriate artifacts. It was fascinating to learn about just how difficult life would have been in an 'out of the way' community on the Ocean.
Then the fun really began. We decided to continue on the road that led further along the coast to the very tip of the peninsula. About 20 kilometers of as scenic of drive as you could ever imagine greeted us. When the road ended at Malin Beg, the views down to the water were spectacular. Trust me when I say, it was a heck of a long way down!
After making our way back to Glencolmcille, we decided to take another coastal road that was to take us to Slieve League Cliffs. Again the views were incredible but paled in comparison to what we saw as we hiked 2 kilometers out to the edge of the cliffs. They are the highest cliffs anywhere in Europe. Wow! Our pictures do not do it justice.
As we were on our way back to Donegal, Sue said that today was probably more impressive than anything that she saw 8 years ago. She said that the views were even more spectacular then the Dingle Peninsula. One word truly describes today...WOW!!!
